How the Retirement (Target) calculator works

Tell the calculator the retirement amount you want in today's money. It grows that amount with inflation to find what it will actually cost when you retire.

It then grows your current savings at your expected return, subtracts it, and works out the monthly saving needed to cover the shortfall.

Worked example

Wanting ₹50 lakh in today's money at retirement, aged 30 and retiring at 60, with 6% inflation, 8% returns and ₹1 lakh already saved: the target grows to about ₹2.87 crore. Your savings grow to about ₹10.9 lakh, leaving ₹2.76 crore to build - a monthly saving of about ₹18,535, or ₹66.7 lakh invested over 30 years.

Things to keep in mind

  • A target in today's money is easy to think about, but always check what it means after inflation.
  • Small increases in return or an earlier start reduce the monthly amount dramatically - that's compounding at work.
  • Use the via-expense calculator if you'd rather derive your target from your living costs.

Formula used

Inflation-adjusted target = A × (1 + g)^Y
FV of savings = S × (1 + i)^n
Monthly saving = (Target − FV of savings) × i / [(1 + i)^n − 1]
A
Retirement amount in today's money
g, Y
Inflation and years to retirement
S
Current savings
i, n
Monthly return and months to retirement
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose my retirement target?

Estimate the annual income you'll need and how long retirement may last, or use our via-expense calculator to derive it from today's expenses.

What return should I assume?

It depends on your asset mix. A balanced long-term portfolio is often planned at 8%–10%; equity-heavy portfolios may be planned higher, with more volatility.

Should my savings rise every year?

Ideally, yes. A step-up SIP that grows with your income makes large targets far more achievable.
