How the NSC calculator works

The National Savings Certificate is a government-backed small savings scheme available at post offices. It has a fixed 5-year tenure, and the interest rate on the day you invest applies for the whole term.

Interest compounds annually and is paid together with the principal at maturity. Enter your investment and the current rate to see the maturity value.

Worked example

Investing ₹1,00,000 at 7.7% p.a. grows to about ₹1,44,903 at the end of 5 years - ₹44,903 of interest.

Things to keep in mind

  • The Government reviews small savings rates every quarter - check the current NSC rate before investing.
  • Investment in NSC qualifies for deduction under Section 80C of the old tax regime. Interest for the first four years is treated as reinvested and can also be claimed under 80C; interest is taxable at your slab rate.
  • Premature encashment is allowed only in limited cases, such as the death of the holder.
  • NSC can be pledged as collateral for loans with banks.

Formula used
