How the SSY calculator works
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is a government-backed savings scheme for a girl child, launched under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative. A parent or guardian can open an account for a daughter below 10 years of age.
Deposits are made for 15 years from opening and the account matures 21 years from opening. This calculator assumes a deposit at the start of each year and annual compounding at the rate you enter.
Worked example
Depositing ₹1,50,000 every year for 15 years at 8.2% p.a. (a total of ₹22,50,000) builds to about ₹71,82,119 at maturity after 21 years - over ₹49 lakh of tax-free interest.
Things to keep in mind
- The interest rate is revised by the Government every quarter, so the actual maturity value will differ from any estimate.
- Deposits qualify for deduction under Section 80C of the old tax regime, and both interest and maturity amount are tax-free.
- Up to 50% of the balance can be withdrawn after the girl turns 18 for higher education.
- A minimum of ₹250 must be deposited each year to keep the account active.

Frequently asked questions
Who can open an SSY account?
A parent or legal guardian of a girl child below 10 years of age. A family can open accounts for up to two daughters (three in the case of twins or triplets).
Can the account be closed early?
Premature closure is allowed on the girl's marriage after she turns 18, or on compassionate grounds such as a life-threatening illness.
Is SSY better than a mutual fund for my daughter?
SSY gives a government-backed, tax-free return, while equity mutual funds offer higher growth potential with market risk. Many parents use both - try pairing SSY with a SIP.
