How the FD calculator works
A Fixed Deposit lets you invest a lump sum with a bank, small finance bank or NBFC for a fixed tenure at an interest rate locked in on the day you invest. Because the rate doesn't change, the maturity amount is known in advance.
Enter the amount, interest rate, tenure and how often interest is compounded to see your maturity value, total interest and effective annual yield.
Worked example
₹5,00,000 invested at 7% p.a. compounded quarterly for 5 years grows to about ₹7,07,389 - roughly ₹2,07,389 of interest. Quarterly compounding lifts the effective yield to about 7.19% a year.
Things to keep in mind
- FD interest is taxed at your income-tax slab rate, and TDS is deducted once interest crosses the prescribed threshold - so post-tax returns are lower than the headline rate.
- Most banks compound FD interest quarterly; cumulative FDs pay it all at maturity, while payout FDs pay interest monthly or quarterly.
- Breaking an FD early usually attracts a penalty of around 0.5%–1% on the applicable rate.
- Bank deposits are insured by DICGC up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including interest.

Frequently asked questions
Is FD better than a debt mutual fund?
FDs offer certainty of returns; debt funds offer potentially better liquidity and tax efficiency for some investors but their returns aren't guaranteed. The right choice depends on your horizon, tax bracket and need for certainty.
Do senior citizens get higher FD rates?
Most banks offer senior citizens an additional 0.25%–0.75% over regular rates. Enter the senior citizen rate in the calculator to see the difference.
What is a tax-saving FD?
A 5-year FD with a lock-in whose investment qualifies for deduction under Section 80C of the old tax regime. Interest remains taxable.
